Environment : tropical to warm-temperate waters worldwide (Indo-Pacific (most diverse), Mediterranean, Caribbean, Eastern Pacific), rare in cold waters; in marine, intertidal to shallow subtidal depth on hard substrates (rocks, coral reefs, pier pilings, dead coral heads, mangrove roots)
