Feeding : carnivorous, opportunistic scavengers on dead or dying marine animals (fish, crustaceans, mollusks) occasionally prey on live, slow-moving invertebrates (e.g., sea cucumbers, brittle stars)

Environment : absent in cold waters; tropical to warm-temperate; Indo-West Pacific (highest diversity), eastern Pacific, Western Atlantic (fewer species) in sand, muddy sand, coral rubble; 5–300 m depth
