Aspect : fairly dense shell of characteristic conical shape, low and wide spire; opening in the form of a rectilinear slit extending from the siphonal canal to the base of the spire; outer lip with acute edge; generally smooth shell with a wide variety of patterns and colors; ranging from a few millimeters to over 20 cm in length

Feeding : carnivorous predators (fishes, moluusks, worms); they use a venom-loaded harpoon tooth to stun or paralyze prey

Environment : inhabit tropical and subtropical marine environments (coral reefs, sandy or rocky substrates); from shallow intertidal waters to depths of over 200 meters, though most are in shallower waters (0–50 meters)
