Environment : inhabit warm, tropical to subtropical marine waters, predominantly in shallow littoral and sublittoral zones of continental shelves (0–80 m depth, occasionally deeper up to 600 m); attached via a strong byssus (byssal threads) to hard or flexible substrates such as rocks, coral, gravel, shells, seagrasses, algae or gorgonians
