Aspect : elongate-ovate to subrectangular, inequilateral (posterior end longer and often truncated), equivalve; smooth surface to weakly sculptured with fine concentric growth lines; interior often brightly colored (purple, orange, pink, or yellow); hinge with two cardinal teeth in each valve and elongated lateral teeth; small to medium sie (10 to 60 mm)
Feeding : filtration of microorganisms in suspension (phytoplankton, zooplankton, detritus, and organic particles)
Environment : worldwide in temperate to tropical waters; Clean, medium to coarse sand in the high-energy intertidal and shallow subtidal zones of exposed ocean beaches (surf-swept sandy shores); ntertidal down to ~50 m depth (most abundant in the lower intertidal depth)
